To negotiate this transition, the design looks to examples from 16th century Mannerist architecture. In Mannerism, new forms of plastic expressionism grappled with the idealized classical order of the early Renaissance, creating a productive tension with the pragmatic realities of the city. Wood framing is left unfinished on the interior, inviting modification by future residents. Each apartment is organized around an oversized stair, creating both a formal centerpiece and an informal living space. Receptive to the stuff of everyday life, these spaces invite their inhabitants to live with an easy sprezzatura.Each apartment is treated with its own interior facade facing the park. The design centers on a pair of vaulted oculi, which project upwards to gather sunlight into the shady, east-facing space during its main operating hours. This mass timber structure is design around a central rotunda, inspired by traidional Maidu roundhouse design. Movement is choreographed by a sequence of framed views, out to Central Park and back into other wings of the museum collection, which guide patrons up and through the gallery spaces. This path is conceived as a connection thread between two “horizons” - a public plaza and garden at the park level, inviting the public to interact with the museum at this formerly closed corner, and
